Greetings from the North Shore, where, indeed, March is ending like a lion, sort of. Two snowstorms are predicted to bring up to a foot of snow to the North Shore over the weekend, so maybe that qualifies.

Meanwhile, we appreciate the moisture, but are ready to toss our snow shovels into the garage.

And art-making continues.

First up is a chance to learn origami, a Japanese paper-folding technique, at Joy and Company from 3:30-5 pm on Thursday.

Making a Victorian Origami Puzzle Purse is the Art Counter Project at Joy and Company this Thursday. 

The event is free, and all supplies will be provided, as well as instructions. Open to all.

On Thursday evening, Drury Lane Books will hold a Full Moon Poetry Reading from 6-8 pm by the bonfire, conditions permitting.

There will be a Full Moon poetry reading at Drury Lane Books on Thursday from 6-8 pm.

Participants are invited to bring some of their own work or favorites from published poets. Open to all. The event will be held indoors in inclement weather. Free. Bookseller Kestrel is the host.

On Friday, North House Folk School will hold a Community Pizza Bake from 5:30-8  pm.

North House will provide pizza dough, sauce, and cheese (GF & DF options available). Bring your own beverage, as well as a favorite pizza topping or two to share.

• 5:30 pm: Please feel free to come on down to the Blue Building to begin chopping ingredients
• 6 pm: A North House staff person will teach everyone how to make a pizza. Please arrive on time, especially if you have never been to a North House pizza bake before.

This event is free and open to all ages. Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult. Wait times may be long, so please bring a snack while you wait.

On Saturday, North House will hold a Drop-in Family Craft event with Susan Ferguson.

Drop by the North House Folk School Blue Building anytime between 10 am and 4 pm to try your hand at a craft. Bring a family member or friend and enjoy a cup of coffee, tea, or hot cocoa while you create a craft to take home.

No RSVP required, free and open to the public, while supplies last.

Also on Saturday, the Vahle Fine Art Gallery will be open for a Celebrate Spring Day from 11 am to 5 pm.

Artist Tim Vahle will be exhibiting his latest work, as well as prints and more. Refreshments will be served.

The gallery is located at Birch Alley, directly behind the Gunflint Tavern. The public is invited.

Lutsen Mountains will hold a Family Easter Weekend from April 3-5.

A Family Easter Festival will be held at Lutsen Mountains.

This is a festive blend of springtime fun and snowy adventure. Enjoy a mountaintop Easter egg hunt, a delicious holiday brunch, and family activities, complete with bunny ears for everyone to wear on the slopes. For more info, click here.

On Wednesday, the  Save the Boundary Waters: North Shore Crockpot Cook-Off & Potluck will be held at the Cook County Community Center.

Desserts, dinners, drinks, dips, and more -anything that can be cooked in a crockpot is welcome at this event. No crockpot, no worries. Everyone is welcome. Enjoy a potluck with your friends, and vote for your favorite entries. First, second, and third place prizes will be given to the winners. (Note: If you are bringing a dish for the cook-off, please arrive between 5 and 5:20 pm.) Vegetarian/vegan option(s) will be available.

Exhibits:

A new exhibit has opened at the Johnson Heritage Post. Entitled   “Line, Shape, Color,” the exhibition features the abstract paintings of  Steven Dahlstrom.

Wild Rose Three, acrylic, with hand-carved frames, by Steven Dahlstrom, is one of the pieces on view at the Heritage Post.

After two decades focused on representational painting, Dahlstrom returns to his roots in abstraction with this collection. The exhibit explores the foundational rhythm of visual art through its most essential elements—line, shape, and color. The exhibit continues through April 19.

The Heritage Post is open from 10 am to 4 pm Thursday through Saturday, and from 1-4 pm Sunday. Free.

Painter James Herold is exhibiting work in the Great Hall at Tettegouche State Park in April. An opening reception will be held on Friday, April 3, from 7-8:30 pm at the Park.

This is the last week to see the winter exhibits at the Duluth Art Institute: Fur Trade Nation: Paintings by Carl Gawboy, and Ojibwe Adornment, curated by Wendy Savage.

On Friday, April 17, Shelley Getten will lead a Poetry and Printmaking workshop at the Grand Marais Public Library.

Shelley Getten will present at the library on April 17.

She will read from her book, Of Cows and Crows, and discuss the creative writing process. Getten will also demonstrate block art printmaking so attendees can learn about making original relief art, as showcased in her book. Bookmarks will be shared with audience members to take home. Books will be available for purchase, and the library will be raffling off a copy to attendees. Open to all.
