Greetings from the North Shore, where, at one point, I thought a friend in Austin, Texas, would get our snow. But we got some, too! Yay!
Add to that, lots of beautiful frosted windows, and here on Lake Superior, we have been gifted with days of sea smoke, the magic of winter.
And art opportunities continue.
First up is the weekly Beginner Knitting classes being held at the Grand Marais Public Library on Thursday from 10-11 am.
The classes are free. The topic this week is “Knit Stitch.” Open to all.
Also this week, the Grand Marais Public Library will start its winter Story Time series.
Story Time starts at 11 am on Thursdays and features lots of great story-telling, songs, and simple crafts for kids ages 1-5, although older kids and adults are welcome. Free. No registration is necessary.
Art Night, a mini-art class at Joy and Company on Thursdays will feature “Upcycling with Lumiere Paint” this week.
Instruction will be available. The class is open to all and free, with a suggested $5 donation
On Friday, the North Shore Winery will start its winter Music Series, which is held from 3:30-5:30 pm through the winter.
Barbara Jean and Mike Lewis kick off the season this week. Free. The public is invited.
On Friday night, an “oldie-but-goodie” movie will be screened at the Cook County Community Center as part of the new Friday Night Films series. The films are all in the public domain and free.
This week, the film will be The Last Time I Saw Paris (1954), a romantic drama, with Elizabeth Taylor and Van Johnson.
The screening starts at 6 p.m. Open to all. Free.
On Saturday, the Grand Portage Heritage Center will launch a new public event entitled Demo Days. The monthly event will feature artisans working in traditional crafts from the Voyageur Days.
This Saturday, David and Tiffany Turner will demonstrate Traditional Textile Arts from that period from 10 am to 3 pm. Free. The public is invited.
If you’re in Duluth on Saturday night, Duluth Does David Bowie with the Centerville All Stars will be performed at the Sacred Heart Music Center.
The concert starts at 7 pm.
On Wednesday, Jan. 29, the Grand Marais Public Library will present a writing workshop on place and setting from award-winning novelist Brian Malloy from 6-8 pm. He is the Writer-in-Residence at the library and will teach a variety of monthly workshops through November.
“This free creative writing session is for beginners and those who’d like a refresher,” writes Malloy. “We’ll discuss and practice strategies to make the places we write about (fictional or real) come alive on the page.”
This workshop will be geared toward adults and youth, ages fourteen and above. Attendees should bring paper and a pen or pencil. No sign-up is required, though it is helpful to mark that you are attending on the Library’s Facebook event page.
This is the first of 12 free workshops. Stay tuned.
Also on Wednesday, the Songwriter Series at the Lofty Gondola on Lutsen Mountains will feature Sarah Morris.
To create a safe and intimate environment, and to give audience members an opportunity to immerse themselves in the stories and craft of the song, guests in the main room are asked to limit conversation during the performance.
The music starts at 8 pm. Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door. For tickets, click here.
