Greetings from the North Shore, where we are celebrating the fullness of fall. It’s a harvest of beauty here, on the land and in art studios along the shore.
For example, the Art Along the Lake Fall Studio Tour is ongoing, with studios and shops throughout the county exhibiting new work by more than 40 artists in every media. And the Johnson Heritage Post‘s Grand Marais Plein Air Exhibit has opened with more than 250 paintings documenting the beauty of this place.(For details, see below)
We’re celebrating its people, too, and this week, it’s Rainbow Trout.
Who is Rainbow Trout? Technically, he is the long-time volunteer Classic Country DJ on WTIP Community Radio, who has fans all over Minnesota and beyond for his weekly classic country show. Everyone is amazed and delighted to listen to Rainbow and, at some point, most ask, who is Rainbow Trout anyway?
Well, WDSE has made a documentary about this extraordinary man to answer this question. It will air on Oct. 5.
BUT, you can see a preview tonight, Sept. 30, on Facebook Live at 7 p.m.
The event will feature never-before-seen performances by local musicians, clips of the upcoming documentary film “Who Is Rainbow Trout?” and in-depth interviews with filmmakers. Following the celebration, attendees will get a chance to view the full documentary film prior to its broadcast premiere.
Tonight’s Facebook Live event will include performances by David Huckfelt, Dave Simonett, Erik Koskinen, Rich Mattson, Annie Humphrey, Teague Alexy, Charlie Parr, Keith Secola, Mary Bue, Brothers Burn Mountain, Barbara Jean & Mike Lewis, Low, and Gaelynn Lea.
Here’s a preview of the preview.
And here’s the link to watch the Live Facebook event, tonight, Sept. 30 at 7 p.m. It should be great. (P.S. Today is Rainbow Trout’s 89th birthday.)

Participants can buy a tea bowl. glaze it themselves and then watch as it, and many others, are fired in a raku kiln. All pieces will be finished by 5:30 p.m. on Saturday and can be taken home.
