Greetings from the North Shore, where fantastic lights danced in the sky across the northern tier states and up into the Arctic spurred by what is called a cannibal CME (coronal mass ejection) from the sun. The sun has had three outbursts since Nov. 1 that were directed at Earth, and the last one moved faster than the others and merged with them, producing the light show on Wednesday night and Thursday morning, according to Spaceweather.com.

Here’s what NOAA’s forecast looked like early Thursday morning. The colors indicate the intensity of the outburst, red being the strongest. It’s been awhile since we have seen an aurora oval look like this:

Closer to home,  the Grand Marais Art Colony‘s Readers & Writers Nonfest is this week, featuring workshops as well as a small number of author readings by Minnesota authors.

On Nov. 5, Kathryn Savage, James Cihlar, Moheb Soliman, and Diane Wilson will read at Studio 21. Each author will do a 30-minute reading of their works according to the schedule listed below:

Kathryn Savage, 5 p.m.; James Cihlar, 5:30 p.m., Moheb Soliman, 6 p.m. and Diane Wilson, 6:30 p.m.

On Nov. 9, Scott Carpenter will read at 5 p.m. and Joyce Sutphen will read at 5:30 p.m.

Each reading will be ticketed separately at a cost of $10 each. You can attend any number of them. Please pre-register for this event online, by emailing info@grandmaraisartcolony.org, or calling 218-387-2737.

An online auction to raise funds for student scholarships will be held from Nov. 6-14 by WISE (Women’s Initiative for Service and Education).  100 percent of proceeds go to scholarships for graduating seniors and adults seeking higher education, Cook County teachers for student enrichment projects, and local non-profit organizations.

The exhibit “Impressions: Paintings of Everyday Life”continues at the Johnson Heritage Post Art Gallery through Nov. 7. It is an exciting show featuring works by Michele Combs, Matt Kania, Marva Harms and Christine Tierney who share their unique perspectives on moments from everyday life.

The Heritage Post is closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. It is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and from 1-4 p.m. Sundays.

Cook County Higher Education will host a class on photo editing entitled Tips and Tricks using FREE based Photo editing on Nov. 17 with Jaye White. It is a Zoom class. Scholarships are available. For more information and to register, click here.

The Grand Marais Art Colony will hold the Empty Bowls Signature Artist Bowl Sale at Studio 21 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 18, as fundraiser for Empty Bowls.

The U.S. Postal Service announced that artist George Morrison (1919-2000) will be honored with a pane of 20 colorful stamps showcasing five of Morrison’s artworks. The selvage will feature a photograph of the artist in his home studio. The George Morrison Forever stamps will be unveiled by the U.S. Postal Service at a First Day Release Ceremony in 2022.
