Greetings from the North Shore, where the Solstice has come and gone and the winter holiday season is upon us. This is usually a quiet time for eating lots of cookies and being with friends and family.
And with all the snow we’ve had (and more to come), it’s a great time to get outdoors and play.
The ski hill is open, the cross-country trails are being groomed, there are even piles of snow in the parking lots already marked with trenches where kids use them as sliding hills.
It’s quiet indoors, too, although many restaurants will be open for Christmas Eve meals. Click here to learn more. And local shops are open for last-minute shopping before the big day.
There’s a great exhibit to see over the holidays, too. The Glass Show, featuring work by nine local glass artists, opened at the Johnson Heritage Post in early December and continues through Jan. 2. Look for work by Mary Bebie, Sharon Frykman, Melissa Grover, Jeri Person, Bob Pranis, Tony Rau, Lee Ross, Nancy Seaton and Veronica Weadock.
Pictured below is the Glass Quilt, a playful collaborative piece by the artists in the show.
Here are some examples of the artists’ work that is on display:
The Johnson Heritage Post will be closed Dec. 25 and Jan. 1. It will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursdays and Fridays and from 1-4 p.m. Sundays.
The Duluth Art Institute is open as well, and features a number of exhibits, including the 63rd Arrowhead Regional Biennial.
Each week, the Art Institute has been featuring work by participating artists. This week, encaustic artist Naomi Hart, is featured.
Hart’s piece in the exhibit is “Requiem.”
