Art is the subject for the next few weeks, as the Art Along the Lake Fall Studio Tour continues, as does the Grand Marais Plein Air 2022 exhibit at the Johnson Heritage Post. And not to forget outside art… the forest is celebrating the end of the season with spectacular fall color, inviting wonderment, and the comforting sound of crunchy leaves underfoot as you walk in the woods. In addition (we wince a little when we say this), snow was falling on the Gunflint Trail on Tuesday. Here’s the proof that it snowed.
There aren’t any snowy Plein-air paintings at the Johnson Heritage Post, but almost every other view of the North Shore is captured in this exhibit. Here are some examples of the artists at work.
Plein Air Grand Marais 2022, sponsored by the Outdoor Painters of Minnesota and the Johnson Heritage Post, features works in oil, watercolor and pastels. The painters, who come from all over the region, spent a week painting Cook County. Many also participated in the Night Paint as well as the Quick Paint, where they had to complete a painting in an hour and a half on Artist’s Point. In all, 60 artists participated in the event, and 175 paintings are included in the exhibit. The event also featured a number of contests and categories, including the Grand Prize for Best Body of Work, which went to Brian Larson. To find out more, click here.
The exhibition continues through Oct. 9. The Heritage Post is open from 10 am to 4 pm Thursday through Saturday and from 1-4 pm Sunday.
The Art Along the Lake Fall Studio Tour continues through Sunday, Oct. 2, with 27 locations open from 10 am to 5 pm every day.
The variety of work available on this tour is amazing. Everything from handmade guitars to oil and acrylic paintings, fused glass beauties and wood turned bowls, sculptures in stone, clay and metal, pottery, jewelry, prints, bead paintings and more are featured at the studios and galleries on the tour. Here’s a quick sampling:
Plus, many of the studios feature demonstrations and daily events during the tour. Click here to see the schedule.

There are other interesting events happening in the county this week.
On Thursday, Cook County Higher Education will host a potluck on campus starting at 5:30 pm to launch the Community Read program for this year. “Firekeeper’s Daughter” by Angeline Boulley has been chosen as the Community Read book for this fall.
CCHE, along with Drury Lane Books and the Grand Marais Public Library, has organized a number of events to promote and support this effort. The Community Read will launch on Thursday, Sept. 29, at CCHE with a discussion about the book and a potluck. Other events in October include lectures as well as Zoom chats and discussions with the author. For more information, contact CCHE at 218-387-3411 or click here.
On Saturday, the Cook County Market, featuring a wide variety of artists and artisans, will be held in the parking lot of The Hub from 10 am to 2 pm. Besides arts and crafts, look for Lake Superior stones, books and live music. Open to all.
Also this week, the New Riverside Ramblers will perform at the Arrowhead Center for the Arts at 7 pm Saturday night, hosted by the North Shore Music Association. The Ramblers (originally known as The Bone Tones) are a two-time winner of the Cajun French Music Association (CFMA) “Prix Dehors” award, given for the best recording by a Cajun band outside Louisiana.
They play high-spirited Cajun music from the rich musical heritage of the bayous and prairies of south Louisiana. From old-style fiddle tunes, lively two-steps, and soulful waltzes, to gritty blues and honky-tonk, they perform a spectrum of styles originating on back porches and in rural dance halls. Their Cajun French vocals have a wide expressive range, reflecting the spirit of the legendary Cajun musicians who’ve inspired them with their own skillful style.
Tickets are $20, general admission, for sale in advance at northshoremusicassociation.com and at the door starting at 6 pm. Masks will be required at this event.
