NorthShore ArtScene Lite

The wonders of fall by Bryan Hansel.

The wonders of fall by Bryan Hansel.

Greetings from the North Shore, where we are basking in beautiful fall weather and the conclusion of a successful summer season. It’s been warm during the day, and a little chilly at night, inviting a campfire and marshmallows and the camaraderie that always celebrates community and the changing of the seasons.

The woods are so gorgeous it’s even hard to explain because even though we’re past peak there are still bushes that are bright red and the yellows are glowing and the waterfalls are flowing because … we had rain. That means–fall mushrooms in all their glory will soon be popping up. Lake Superior is reflecting the changes in the seasons too, with pounding waves when the wind howls and a silky surface when it’s calm.

It’s probably fair to say that most of us are sitting back a little this week, too, now that the busiest season is behind us and we are just enjoying being here. NorthShore ArtScene is no exception. We’re going Lite this week. But there is still plenty to do and see. Here are a few highlights:

In honor of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, the Cook County Violence Prevention Center will hold a Community Candlelight Vigil of Hope and Remembrance on Thursday, Oct. 27 at 6 pm in Harbor Park. The public is invited.

The Candlelight Vigil of Hope and Remembrance will be held at 6 pm Thursday, Oct. 27 in Harbor Park. Open to

Every year at the October vigil, the names and stories of each person who was murdered in Minnesota the previous year as a result of domestic violence is read aloud. It is an important part of memory keeping for the victims who cannot be present with their family, friends, children, coworkers, and communities because their lives were taken away by violence and abuse.

The vigil will also feature poetry and music to cultivate healing and hope as a community. The public is invited to come to remember victims, honor survivors, and build hope for a future free from domestic violence.

On Saturday, The Evening Stars will play for a Halloween Party at the Grand Portage Lodge and Casino.  Join the Evening Stars at the Grand Portage Event Center on Saturday, Oct. 29 for rad dance music and a costume contest with cash prizes for creativity and originality.

The exhibit, Flotsam and Jetsam, is at the Johnson Heritage Post Gallery through Nov.6.

For an extraordinary art experience on every level, including emotional power, visual excitement, and intriguing surfaces, textures, and concepts, the “Flotsam and Jetsam: Drawings and Sculpture” exhibit by John Books, Tom Christiansen, and Greg Mueller has it all. Each artist speaks with individual voices and media, but the show itself just reverberates with the inner struggles and inner lives of the artists. It is highly recommended and continues at the Johnson Heritage Post through Nov. 6. To preview some of the pieces in the exhibit, click here.

North House Folk School will open an exhibit at the Johnson Heritage  Post entitled Living With Craft: An Exhibition Celebrating North House’s Artisan Development Nov. 11.

The makers featured in Living with Craft are past or present fellows in North House Folk School’s Artisan Development Program, an intensive residency during which they are literally ‘living with craft’ for two years. Participants live in Grand Marais, where they are provided with studio space, housing, and funding to seek mentorship, learn new techniques, develop teaching skills, and cultivate their craft practice—all in pursuit of creating a sustainable life and career as a maker. Designed to support the development of the next generation of traditional craft teaching artisans, the Artisan Development Program began in 2017, and has seven alumni and four current participants.

Note: At this point, I need to offer an apology. The only area in this blog that is LITE is the photographs. So sorry that I had so many interesting items this week that I just couldn’t let them sit in my files. I hope you enjoyed it anyway. If you’d like to donate to NorthShore ArtScene to keep it alive and well, please consider clicking on the link below. Sustaining memberships are particularly welcome.

I’d like to thank Jeremy Lopez for his live music compilation and for suggesting we run that wonderful Homegrown Tomato video by Guy Clark. Jeremy also helps with back door computer tech, for which we are very grateful. He and Yvonne Mills were proofreaders/copyeditors this week. Thank you. We’re also so grateful for everyone who bothers to post their work on Facebook and Instagram, as well as emails information and images to me because it makes it possible to keep this blog vital and alive and relevant to the arts on the North Shore. I hope you have a good week. Thank you.
