Radio Waves, Art-Making and Fall Harvests

Greetings from the North Shore where hot humid days turned into a welcome rain followed by cold, pointing out that Fall was indeed on on its way. The maple trees seconded that observation.

Yes! Fall is a special time on the North Shore. Not only are the colors gorgeous, but we also have two great music concerts to enjoy, the Art Along the Lake Fall Studio Tour and an inspiring exhibit of plein air paintings at the Johnson Heritage Post produced by participants in the Plein Air Grand Marais Competition.

There’s plenty to do this week, too, so let’s get started.

First up this week is Art Night at Joy and Company where participants make art with different media carried at the shop. This week, it’s creating with DecoArt paints.

The paints come in a wide variety of colors and have excellent coverage. Art Night is held from 4-6 pm at the shop and includes demonstrations and all supplies. Free, with a suggested donation.

Also on Thursday evening, the Grand Marais Farmer’s Market is held in the parking lot of the Cook County Community Center from 4:30-6 pm.

At the market, look for a wide variety of fresh vegetables and flowers, fresh eggs, maple syrup, and baked goods, including artisan breads and sweets. Open to all. SNAP accepted.

Also on Thursday, Historic Cook County Trivia Night is held at Up Yonder from 7-9 pm.

WTIP’s Radio Waves Music Festival is this week! It opens at 2:30 pm on Friday at Sweetheart’s Bluff at the Rec Park with the Stone Bridge Singers from Grand Portage. The music doesn’t stop for three days featuring a wide variety of musical styles as well as local, regional, and national musicians.

This marks the 25th birthday of WTIP Community Radio and the 16th year of this family-friendly festival.

Twenty-two local, regional and national acts will take the stage this year, including R&B legend John Ellison and The Carpenter Ants, who will perform a 90-minute gospel set on Sunday morning of the Festival. Music fans far and wide will recognize John as the singer-songwriter of “Some Kind of Wonderful” and many other R&B classics. Just to name a few other bands: Humbird, Ginger Bones, Dre AKA Jamaican, The Evening Stars, North Shore Community Swing Band, Sky Blue Jazz Ensemble, David Huckfelt and Jeremy Ylvisake, Boss Mama and Jebberhooch. Tickets are $20 per day or $40 for a weekend pass. Also on Friday, Jeri Person will teach a class on making glass spinners at Joy and Company from 10 am to 2 pm.

She will explain the process and let participants design their pieces.  Reservations are not required but there could be a wait. Please call 218-387-1004 to let the store know you are coming – or drop in the day of. This class is held every second Friday of the month. The class costs $25.

Saturday opens with the Cook County Market, which is held in the parking lot of the Hub from 10 am to 2 pm.

Local author, Jennifer Shoals, has just published The Next World: Our Expanidng Consciousness, the third book in her series, Inspiring Deeper Connections. She has a booth at the Cook County Market.

All of the vendors at the market are from Cook County and feature everything from handmade pottery, weaving fiber art, leatherwork, glass art, and more. Open to all.

Also on Saturday, Sugarloaf Cove will feature drop-in watercolor classes with artist Allison Healy, who is a current resident artist at the Grand Marais Art Colony.  Healy forages for her own pigments, and the drop-in event will include an opportunity for participants to try their hand at making some.

The event is free and will be held from 9 am to noon.

Also on Saturday, veteran photographer and author, Craig Blacklock, will be at the Grand Portage Heritage Center to give a presentation about his latest book, “ Light Waves – Abstract Photographs of Reflections from Lake Superior.”

Blacklock will show his traditional landscapes from Lake Superior providing both historical and artistic context for his Light Waves images, present the Light Waves images within the context of other abstract artists, including Grand Portage’s George Morrison, and show segments of his otherworldly, and mesmerizing Light Waves video. The event is free. Open to all.

Also on Saturday, the new coffee shop on the Gunflint Trail, Loons Nest Coffee, will hold a Grand Opening event at the shop.

The shop roasts its own coffee at its roasting plant Carlson Roasting Co. in Houston, Minn. The coffee is organic and Fair Trade coffee selected from high-quality specialty coffee producers around the world. The Grand Opening will be from 7 am to 2 pm. The public is invited.

And not to forget the continuing music at the Radio Waves Music Festival on Saturday and Sunday. Bands play until 10 pm Saturday and 4 pm Sunday. See the Music Schedule below.

On Monday, Beach Knitting, a popular event organized by Dappled Fern Fibers, will be held on the  Harbor Park beach from 9 – 11 am.

This weekly event invites knitters and crafters to bring their work to the beach for a few hours with fellow crafters working together outdoors. Participants are asked to bring chairs and warm clothing since it can be much cooler by Lake Superior. Open to all.

Exhibits:

The exhibit continues through Sept. 17. The Heritage Post is open from 10 am to 4 pm Wednesday through Sunday. It is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. Free.

A new exhibit has opened in the Great Hall at Tettegouche State Park featuring the paintings of Alexa Carson.

Carson is a painter of the wild and the primal. In this collection of paintings, she explores the magic of nature and the concept that humans are an innate piece of the cosmic web that is “nature” (rather than a thing apart). The exhibit continues through the month of September. Open to all. Free.

Cedar Coffee Company in Two Harbors is currently showing work by members of the Lake Superior Watercolor Society. In all, 11 painters have work in the show.

The Duluth Art Institue is featuring a number of exhibits, including Keren Kroul’sAtlas of the Mind.

The exhibit is a series of watercolors that explores relationships with the world. Kroul and the other artists currently exhibiting at the Art Institute will be at the Art Night Out, Sept. 12, starting at 5:30 pm.

 Painter Marissa Saurer is the September artist at the Art & Soul Gallery & Gift House in Ely.

Her exhibit, “Cold World Adventures,” showcases her expeditions in The Arctic, Alaska, and Iceland. The gallery provides local artists (living within 30 miles of Ely) the opportunity to display and sell their art. It is open from 10 am to 5 pm Monday through Saturday and is located at 427 E. Sheridan Rd. For more information about the gallery, click here.

Next weekend, North House Folk School will present Unplugged 2023 featuring  concerts, craft demonstrations, classes, a Silent Auction, and more.

 Thursday and Friday, Sept. 14 & 15, will feature two unforgettable nights of music with Sean Carey, Pieta Brown, Mike Lewis, Jeremy Ylvisaker, Joe Rainey Sr., Dylan Jennings, and Barbara Jean Meyers. Saturday morning, Sept. 16, will mark the second annual free family concert, followed by the Birch Bark Bash hosted by Chef Scott Graden of the New Scenic Café. Also featured will be the  Folk Artisan Marketplace, along with a speaker series, and the Points North Online Auction.  To find out more, click here.

Also that weekend, painters from all over the region will descend on Cook County for the Plein Air Grand Marais Competition. Painters will spend the week painting in the county, followed by an exhibit of their work at the Johnson Heritage Post.

The weekend after that, The Art Along the Lake Fall Studio Tour begins Sept. 22 and runs through Oct. 1. This is a great opportunity for artists to showcase their work and for their audience/fans to see their studios and find out more about the artist and their art.
