Greetings from the North Shore where we really do celebrate the moose this weekend during Moose Madness Weekend. Although we must admit that some of the contests are pretty quirky, they are quite entertaining and make for great experiences for families during MEA weekend in Grand Marais. Here’s a list of all the events and activities this weekend. See below for details.
The moose themselves are preoccupied with other things. It’s the rut season and there are great opportunities to see them as they chase each other through the woods.
Here are a few moose photos we found this week:
So here are some of the things we can do over the weekend:
First up is David Hahn Art Days, an art event for youth that will be held at Studio 21 on Oct. 19 & 20.
This free youth art opportunity offers participants the chance to work on multiple art projects including Paint-a-bowl for Empty Bowls, wand making, Suminagashi (fish printmaking), and more.
Hahn was a beloved artist and community member and for years volunteered to teach art to youth at the public school and the Grand Marais Art Colony. This opportunity at Studio 21 is made possible by his generous memorial gifts to the Art Colony.
The drop-in free classes will be held from 10 am to 2 pm at Studio 21. Children under the age of 8 must be accompanied by an adult.
Thursday is also Paint-A-Halloweewn-Mask Night at Joy and Company during its weekly Art Night.
Participants are invited to the shop from 4-6 pm to paint masks for the coming holiday. The event is free with a suggested donation. Open to all.
North House Folk School is holding Family Weekend Oct 19-21. Campus tours begin on Thursday, Oct.19, and drop-in family activities and classes are on Friday and Saturday. There are a number of special events scheduled, too.
The weekend features a dozen or more classes, some for kids only, others for adults and kids to take together. From cooking to fiber arts, woodworking to blacksmithing. There is a skill to learn for everyone. The weekend includes both formal classes that require registration ahead of time as well as drop-in activities that are free and require no pre-registration. Here are a few highlights:

Family Fun Night – Games, S’mores, and Apple Pressing Demonstration, Friday, Oct. 20, from 5-7 pm.

The day starts in the parking lot of the Hub, where the Cook County Market celebrates its last market of the 2023 season.
Look for a wide variety of arts and crafts, including pottery, paintings, leatherwork, hand-knit hats, Lake Superior stones, jewelry, and more. Open to all.
Also at 10 am on Saturday, the Grand Opening for the 1st & 2nd Thrift Store in downtown Grand Marais begins.
The celebration at its new location, 11 First Ave. W., in the old Birchbark Books Building, will be held from 10 am – 4 pm. Everyone is invited.
At 11 am on Saturday, author Polly Carlson Voiles and illustrator Consie Powell will discuss their book “Star Party” at Drury Lane Books.
This is a story about a little girl discovering the mysteries of the night sky with her grandparents. The presentation is open to all. Free.
Also on Saturday, North Shore photographer Christian Dalbec will give a presentation about his photography at Sivertson Gallery from 1-3 pm.
Dalbec, whose work is showcased at the gallery, lives in Two Harbors. On a typical morning, he wakes before sunrise and drives along still-dark Hwy.61, eventually stopping at Split Rock Lighthouse State Park. There, he enters cold Lake Superior wearing a helmet, wetsuit, snorkel, fins, and mask and begins photographing. His distinctive photos are made from an unusual vantage point—from within the lake itself while swimming. It’s difficult and dangerous work, but ultimately his photographs capture the unusual perspective of a fish in water. The presentation is free and open to all.
At 4 pm, the Grand Marais Film Society will present a halloween film for kids at the Arrowhead Center for the Arts.
The screening is open to all. Costumes encouraged. Food will be available to purchase.
And finally, there will be an Author Talk at Drury Lane Books with Jeremy Norton discussing “Trauma Sponges: Dispatches from the Scarred Heart of Emergency Response”, from 6 to 7:30 pm.
In this remarkable memoir, Norton marshals twenty-two years of professional experience to offer, with compassion and critique, an extraordinary portrayal of emergency responders. From his first days as a rookie firefighter and emergency medical technician to his command of a company as a 20-year veteran, Norton documents the life of an emergency responder in Minneapolis. The presentation is open to the public. All invited.
And not to forget the Contra Dance at North House Folk School on Saturday night. The family dance starts at 6 pm with adults dancing after 7 pm.
On Thursday, Oct. 26, the annual Visit Cook County & Cook County Chamber of Commerce Fall Gala will be held at Up Yonder.
Social hour starts at 5 pm with hearty appetizers and live music with Timmy Haus. The award ceremony is at 6:30 pm. General admission tickets are $20. For tickets, click here.

Ma’iingan: Brother Wolf
With insight from Ojibwe elders, biologists, and artist Rabbett Before Horses Strickland, this film captures enduring spiritual connections with Brother Wolf, the lasting bonds and responsibilities shared between native people and the wolf species, and the opportunities and challenges presented by the reintroduction and protection of the animals across reservation lands. Here is the link to the film produced by Wisconsin Public Television. It’s 1 1/2 hours, but interesting.
Here’s a link to more of his paintings.
Layne Kennedy: “For many who’ve never had the chance to visit a large high-end printing facility, I used my iPhone to snap a few pix and video clips during the printing of my newest book; BEYOND THE LIGHT-The Stories Behind The Photographs. The book was printed at Brilliant Graphics in Exton, PA, and designed by Phil Unetic in New Jersey. Both did excellent work.”
