Greetings from the North Shore where we have settled into the rest of winter. In our case, it means watching waves on Lake Superior’s blustery days, ice fishing on lakes still well-frozen, hiking and biking the trails, and loving the sunshine brought to us this time of year.

Art show and festival deadlines loom, too, and everyone is busy making for the upcoming season.
Joy and Company will hold a Free Paint event for Art Night this week. There are no rules. Come to the shop, grab a canvas, and let your imagination run wild. Demonstrations and supplies will be available.
It is Free Paint Night at Joy and Company on Thursday.
The event is held from 3:30-5 pm on Thursday, Feb. 29. It is free with a suggested $5 donation. Open to all.
For those who work in softer media, Dappled Fern Fibers will hold Hygge Night from 6-7 pm Thursday. The backroom of the shop is open for those who would like to bring their knitting or felting projects to work on with friends and members of the community.
Crafters take advantage of Hygge Night (Thursdays) and the Fiber Circle (Saturdays) at Dappled Fern Fibers.
On Saturday, the shop also opens its doors to crafters with a Fiber Circle, which is held from 10 am to noon. Both events are free.
And today, Feb. 29, is the last day to take the Cook County Winter Fireplace Tour.

Friday Night is Movie Night at the Grand Marais Public Library. This week’s movie is EO (TV-14; 2022), winner of the Jury Prize at @TVFestivaldeCannes and Poland’s entry for Best International Film at the 95th Academy Awards. It’s a great film and has been described as “Visual storytelling at its best.”

On Saturday, the Winter Market will be held at The Hub from 10 am to 4 pm featuring a wide variety of work by local artists. Look for pottery, prints, paintings, fiberwork, glass and more. The public is invited.
Kari Carter will have her pottery at the Winter Market at the Hub on Saturday.
Artists and artisans who will be at the market include Lily Wilson, Buffy Butz, Gina Adams, Kim Knutson, Megan McClanahan, Kari Carter, Jayne Richards, Linda Bauer, Vicki Biggs-Anderson, and Jamie Rex.
Saturday night is Movie Night at the Arrowhead Center for the Arts sponsored by the Grand Marais Film Society.
The Grand Marais Film Society will screen two films on March 2.
Two films are to be screened, one at 4 pm for a younger audience and one at 7 pm for all ages. The evening movie is tagged as “The Film of the Year.” Tickets are $6. To find out more, click here.
On Tuesday night, author Diane Wilson will give a free, virtual presentation as part of Leopold Week.

On Wednesday, award-winning author Staci Lola Drouillard will give a presentation at the Grand Marais Public Library at 6 pm.

Artists participating in Winter Plein Air, an on-site stay at YMCA Camp Menogyn, are painting outdoors this week and will exhibit their work at the Johnson Heritage Post with an opening reception on Friday, March 8.

The Duluth Art Institute has several exhibits, including Ta-coumba T. Aiken | The Way I See. Aiken is color-blind, and his prismatic paintings begin in black and white—because that is how he sees.

He starts with a black stroke that contrasts against the white canvas. Then, in a process Aiken calls spirit writing, he repeats the freeform dark lines to fill the canvas and build abstract shapes. He adds color—dioxazine violet, cadmium yellow, light magenta—reading their names from tubes, jars, and bottles to augment his skewed vision of color. Aiken embraces his color blindness and experiments with further altering his view while painting, alternating between wearing and removing his glasses. The exhibit continues through April 8.
The Walker Art Center in Minneapolis is featuring the exhibit, Multiple Realities: Experimental Art in the Eastern Bloc, 1960s–1980s.

The exhibition offers a sweeping survey of experimental art made in six Central Eastern European nations during the 1960s to 1980s. Charting a generation of artists invested in experimentation, the Walker-organized exhibition features artworks rarely seen in the United States. Despite their geographical proximity, artists working during this time encountered different conditions for daily life and art-making, confronting varying degrees of control and pressure exerted by state authorities. Embracing conceptual or formal innovation and a spirit of adventurousness, Multiple Realities sheds light on ways that artists refused, circumvented, eluded, and subverted official systems, in the process creating works often riddled with wit, humor, or irony. The North Shore Music Association presents Patsy O’Brien and Dick Hensold in concert at the Arrowhead Center for the Arts in Grand Marais, Saturday, March 9 at 7 pm. O’Brien is a singer, songwriter, and guitarist from County Cork in Ireland. Hensold is the leading performer of Northumbrian small pipes in North America. Together they play a concert of Celtic music that is both traditional and innovative, focused and eclectic.
The program is half songs and half instrumentals, including a variety of songs from Britain and Ireland, accompanied by guitar and Northumbrian small pipes (a quiet bagpipe from Northeast England). It also features traditional and historical tunes from Cape Breton Island, Scotland, Ireland, and Northumberland. To get tickets, click here. Tickets are also sold at the door.
