Greetings from the North Shore, where we welcome the Equinox and beautiful night skies. Easter Week is also on its way, and this year, we might even find tiny spring flowers in the woods. They’re already popping up in the Twin Cities.
And it’s dry on the North Shore. We had a few small fires reported this week already.
Be careful out there. Don’t throw anything burning out of a car window, please.
Truth be told, we could also have a blizzard the last week of March since the month did come in like a lamb. Either way, we continue to have a very early spring, a novelty for sure.
Art Night at Joy and Company will present an opportunity to experiment with novelty, too, offering participants a chance to create interest and beauty by pouring paint onto small canvases.
Art Night is held in the shop from 3:30-5 pm and is free, with a suggested $5 donation. All supplies needed will be available as well as some instruction. Open to all.

At noon, there’s a Lunch and Learn–A Conversation with Jan Harm ter Brugge with Jögge Sundqvist and Peter Lamb. The event is free. Participants can bring their lunch.

In all, the artist created 365 images of women through the ages. The exhibit continues through April 1.
The Tweed Museum of Art is exhibiting “Willie Little: Miles To Go Before I Sleep,” a sculptural installation comprised of 12 contemporary African-inspired, carved walking sticks.
This piece is a new acquisition at the Tweed. On its web page, Willie Little writes about the work:
“Reimagined from a May 2019 trip home to where I grew up in North Carolina.
I had not gone home to the Pactolus Township in eastern North Carolina for 13 years. I was filled with fear and trepidation for many reasons. Being a gay Black man from the rural south was one of the biggest reasons to stay away. I had no words to say about this work, for an upcoming installation in Portland, Oregon. I wanted my thoughts to reflect how I felt in 2019 which had evolved from its first incarnation. As I was 30 miles away from home, the words flowed like a river; like the Tar River, the place I was baptized at the age of 6.” To read his short essay, click here.
At the Prøve Gallery in Duluth, fabric artist Lauren Faherty opens an exhibit entitled Interlaced, on March 15th. Faherty is a visual artist and art educator who lives and works in Duluth.
Interlaced is a community-based art project that uses donated textiles to discover communities we are part of and woven into. Much like a patchwork quilt, in which each piece of fabric has its history, the project connects and celebrates community members through the use of textiles. This exhibition features abstract individual portraits, weavings, and other sculptural works, all created with donated fabric.
Interlaced will be on view from March 15 to May 10. The exhibition opens on Friday, March 15 with a reception from 6-9 pm. Gallery hours are Wednesday – Friday, 4-7 pm, and Saturday, 12-4 pm. Note: The gallery will be closed on March 16.
There is a new exhibit of artwork at the Cedar Coffee House in Two Harbors.
“Listening,” an exhibit currently on view at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, surveys the work of Minneapolis–based artist Tetsuya Yamada (Japan, b. 1968) whose interdisciplinary practice amplifies the poetry found in the everyday. From exquisitely crafted ceramic sculptures to delicate drawings to documentation of the artist’s self-organized installations in surprising sites around the Twin Cities, the featured works highlight Yamada’s engagement with the connections between life and art.
Yamada’s artistic influences include the ancient Japanese forms of Noh theater and the traditional tea ceremony; the punk rock and skateboarding cultures of his youth in Tokyo; the modernism of Constantin Brancusi and Isamu Noguchi; and the democracy of the “readymade” object espoused by Marcel Duchamp. Many of Yamada’s pieces include found materials, such as sawhorses, plywood, shards of glass from his own backyard, or natural elements, in combination with his ceramic objects. His wide-ranging artistic practice is guided by sensitive material attention, a practice of “listening” to the behavior of substances, objects, and spaces.
The exhibition, the first US museum presentation of Yamada’s work, features more than 50 works from 2001 to the present, including sculptures in ceramic, wood, and metal; paintings; drawings; photographs; video; and a site-specific installation in Cargill Lounge.

Have a great weekend, everyone!
Ok, we’ll admit it! We really like putting out these issues every week. It’s interesting, it provides a service to the community and, in my case, I like finding things that are unusual or beautiful, or totally out of the box. Some weeks are more challenging than others, I must admit. In either case, we need your support to continue to do this. Please consider donating today, whatever is comfortable for you. You can click on the icon below and donate online or send a check to NorthShore ArtScene, PO Box 1232, Grand Marais, MN 55604.
P.S. Jeremy Lopez, Yvonne Mills, and Kari Carter are the three people who help make this all possible every week. A donation is a Thank You to them, too.
