Greetings from the North Shore, where we welcome early summer with a lot of enthusiasm. The forest is beautiful, bursting with life after the rains. Look for wildflowers and mushrooms, listen to bird conversations, inhale the fragrance that changes at almost every step.
In town, flower gardens are coming into their own, making everyone happy.
And rainbows dot the sea and sky.
In the human world, art is king with celebrations and get-togethers, music, festivals and, of course, the splendors of the Big Lake getting a lot of our attention.
Let’s start with art.
So what, exactly, is in the White Box that participants get when they turn up for Art Night at Joy and Company on Thursday afternoons?
Here’s what they say at the shop: “We will have Alcohol Ink – Gouache – Rock and dot painting- acrylic paints – markers- pencils- pastels as well as stencils and other cool collage stuff. Come into Joy and find the Art Counter – grab a box – each box will have instructions on the medium you chose and a list of the tools you’ll need to use the white box art materials. Go to our supplies area on the bookshelf and find yourself a seat at the Art Counter – PLAY!”
Art Night is free and open to all, with a suggested $5 donation, and runs from 3:30-5 pm.
Also on Thursday, WTIP will host Trivia Night at Up Yonder from 6-8 pm.
This is bar-style Trivia and is always a fun time with plenty of good questions. Hosts this week are Will Moore and Kirsten Wisniewski. Free and open to all.

The exhibit, From Where They Came: Portraits from Ukraine by Katherine Turczan, continues at the Tweed Museum of Art.
In 1991, Katherine Turczan, in response to her parents’ dementia, set out to photograph their homeland, Ukraine. There, she found a people amid momentous historical change.
Using her 8”x10” large format camera, traveling by bus and train, Turczan set out into the streets of cities and villages to discover the country’s citizens. Between 1991 and 2008, she made many trips to Ukraine, searching for the collective experience of a nation undergoing profound change. The result is a body of work in the field, including nuns, and children from Chernobyl sanitariums. In each of her portraits, Ukraine’s struggle is given a human face.
The exhibit continues through Aug. 10.
This is the last weekend to see Ziigwan: New Acquisitions to the Permanent Collection at the Thunder Bay Art Gallery.
Ziigwan means “spring” or “early spring” in Anishinaabemowin. In the north, the first signs of spring include ice breaking, snow melting, birdsong, and a lingering chill in the air. In this selection of works, currents of ice blue, wane yellow, and mud-puddle brown flow through images of animals, birds, landscapes, human figures, beings, stories, and teachings. What can these works reveal about change as a state of vulnerability, uncertainty, and raw survival?
The exhibition Women in Soviet Art: 1930-1991, is currently on view at the Museum of Russian Art in Minneapolis.
This exhibition brings together thirty paintings by prominent Soviet artists to examine the visual representations of women during the Soviet era. Avoiding traditional depictions of the cloistered feminine world, Soviet art passionately propagated the images of women as active contributors to the socialist economy. The exhibit will be on view in the Mezzanine Gallery through Oct. 20.

Have a great weekend, everyone!!!
FYI: Gathering, gathering, gathering — that’s what I do to prepare to put out NorthShore ArtScene every week. It’s fun, especially when I find a really beautiful photograph or a wonderful art exhibit or music video to share with you. But, as you can imagine, it takes a lot of time and experience to put everything together every week, and your support helps a lot. It gives me the freedom to continue this work. Donate today!
And, to those who are already helping support NorthShore ArtScene — Thank you!
BTW: A contribution also says thank you to the people who help me do this every week: Jeremy Lopez (the Live Music Schedule, tech support, and music suggestions), Yvonne Mills (proofreading), and Kari Carter (caption editing and research.) Adam Kirsch provided some of the links to our music videos this week. Thank you all!
