Greetings from the North Shore, where November brings many things: Moose, November gales, beautiful sunrises, and a full moon. Add to that people-oriented things like holiday fairs and Thanksgiving dinners – this month gets high ratings.
And, of course, art-making continues.
This week, Art Night at Joy and Company will feature stamp printing.
Stamp printing is a great, easy method of making a relief print. Though you can make editioned prints with traditional linoleum, rubber carving blocks are a fun do-it-yourself way to stamp on paper and fabric. Participants will be given an overview of the process for making simple, hand-carved stamps, as well as some tips along the way. The event will be held from 3:30-5 pm in the shop and is free, with a suggested $5 donation.
Also on Thursday, the Grand Marais Art Colony will hold an Open Studio featuring Joanna Manning. The presentation will be in the Art Colony’s Ceramics Studio.
Manning will demonstrate a number of different techniques to make hand-built objects, including vases, and talk about different ways to create interest on the surface. The workshop is free. To sign up, click here.
Thursday is also a chance to learn about modern dance.
The Drop-In Modern Dance class is open to all. Cost is $0-$15. It will be held from 5:30 to 7 pm.
This Thursday is also the night for The East End’s Got Talent!, a community celebration of talent and food held at the Hovland Town Hall.
Everyone is invited to bring a dish to share and recite a poem, tell a story, play a favorite song, tell a joke, or demonstrate an art technique … all types of performances are welcome. Free and open to all.
The North Shore Swing Band plays for Jazz Night at Up Yonder at 7 pm Thursday.
The event is free. The public is invited.
On Friday, Winterer’s Gathering will be held at North House Folk School featuring presentations, demonstrations, the Arctic Film Festival, and much more over the weekend.
The public is invited to celebrate the crafts, customs, and stories that have been inspired by winter. The event will feature winter-centric coursework, a winter tent camp, a gear sale, a film festival, speakers, and more.
Some highlights include:
Friday:
- Open Fire Dinner on a Stick & Outdoor Shorts Film Festival, 6 pm start
- Snowshoe Shuffle Traditional Community Contra Dance, 6:30 pm family dance, 7:30 pm community dance.
- Cold Snap Poetry Slam, 7 pm.
Saturday:
- The Great Gear & Ski Sale, 10 am
- The Deep Freeze Chili Feed, 5:30-7 pm
This year’s featured speaker is Niilá Omma, who will give his presentation at 7 pm on Saturday.
Omma, a Sámi craftsman, will discuss his story and what it means to him to be Sámi, to be a traditional craftsman, and to carry his culture in these complicated times.
He grew up in two worlds: much of the time, he was a student at a Swedish public school who loved reading and riding his motocross bike. On the school holidays and in the summer weeks, he would spend time with his family who live inland and help them in their work as traditional reindeer herders. Craft (duodji) is still an important part of the nomadic lifestyle the herders lead. When Niilá was in his early 20s, his grandfather taught him many skills right in his garage. Today, Niilá still walks in two worlds, blending traditional and modern lifestyles as a maker.
The presentation is free and the public is invited.
The presentation will be followed by the film, “Twice Colonized,” at 9 pm.
This is only one of the films that will be screened during the Arctic Film Festival. To see the complete schedule, click here.
This is the final weekend of the Grand Marais Playhouse presentation of the musical, “The Lady Pirates of Captain Bree” at the Arrowhead Center for the Arts.
Performances are at 7 pm on Friday and Saturday and 2 pm on Sunday. Look for enthusiastic dancing, sword fights and singing, and a live band. Tickets are $15 adults, $10 students. To get tickets, click here. They are also sold at the door.
Saturday marks the beginning of the holiday market season with the Up On the Yonder Holiday Market from 11 am to 5 pm. Want to shop early? For a $10 donation to Cook County Schools PTA, shoppers can start at 10:30 am.
Look for more than 16 vendors at this sale including potters Kari Carter and Natalie Sobanja, knitter Jamie Rex, glass and ceramics artist Terry Lord Lewis, and painter Gina Adams. There’s a great selection of vendors, too, including the Big Lake, JR Designs, and the Chocolate Dog. To find out more, click here.
Also on Saturday, Jeri Person will teach a class on How to Make Glass Christmas Ornaments at Joy and Company.
The class will be held from 1-4 pm. Drop-ins are welcome. The cost is $20 and the ornaments can be picked up the next day. They can be shipped for $5. Open to all.
Exhibits:
The Love Our Neighbor exhibit continues at the Johnson Heritage Post. The multi-media exhibit organized by the Spirit of the Wilderness Episcopal Church, features works by artists of every age. Community members were challenged to create a work that expresses loving one’s neighbor and more than 30 artists responded with inspiring works. Each of the artists was asked about how their pieces respond to the theme, Love Your Neighbor. Here are a few examples:
The exhibit continues through Dec. 1. Open to all. Free.
At the Zeitgeist Arts Cafe in Duluth, join artist Sarah Brokke and poet Kyle Leia as they share their collaborative project ‘Irrevocable Wholeness’, focused on healing and whole-hearted navigation of our humanity.
Works on view include pieces inspired by Leia’s writing, and, in turn, poems created based on Brokke’s paintings; which will result in an upcoming publication. The exhibit continues through the end of the month.
At the Thunder Bay Art Gallery the exhibit “petal, clay, berry, leaf: natural inks, dyes, and pigments in Northern Ontario”, with work by Anong Migwans Beam, is currently on view. The artist will give an Artist Talk at the gallery tonight, Nov. 21, at 6:30 pm, Eastern Time.
Anong Migwans Beam is a painter from M’chigeeng First Nation on Manitoulin Island. The physical history of place and the relationship between water and memory inspire her. Anong was born to artist parents, Carl Beam and Ann Beam, who encouraged her to develop as an artist. She was raised meaningfully connected to her artistic familial roots and rich Ojibwe ancestral heritage. As the founder of Beam Paints, Anong creates oil and watercolor paints sourced from local pigments and minerals. She has exhibited her work across Canada.
