Greetings from the North Shore, where the Spring Equinox has come and gone and we are celebrating the new light and anticipating spring. We remember that March came in like a lamb and haven’t been surprised but grateful to have new snows on the land in the last week. It has been a dry winter- some snow, but not a lot of it. And to be fair– many are looking forward to winter being done.
Meanwhile, the art-making season has ramped up as artists get ready for the coming season.
Joy and Company will hold a mini-workshop on gel-plate printing on Thursday from 3:30-5 pm at the shop.

The Art Night event includes supplies and instruction and is free, with a suggested $5 donation.
Barbara Jean and Mike Lewis will play at the North Shore Winery on Friday as part of its Winter Music Series.

Films on Friday, the free film series that features old-time classic films, continues its screenings at the Cook County Community Center. This week’s offering: Dishonored Lady (1947), a psychological crime noir starring Hedy Lamarr, Dennis O’Keefe, and John Loder. Here’s a trailer:

The Grand Marais Public Library has postponed the workshop, Carving Your Own Clan with Jeffrey Tibbetts, to Friday, April 4, due to weather concerns.
Jeffrey Tibbetts will teach a workshop at the Grand Marais Public Library..
The workshop is an art and culture program with Tibbetts, a Minnesota artist and Ojibwe educator. The program is meant for ages 10 and up. Adult supervision will be required for younger attendees, as sharp objects will be used to carve. Space and supplies are limited to 15 participants. On Saturday evening, a concert featuring Adam Kirsch, Basalta with Britt Malec, Hannah Miller, and Liv Sulerud and the Decomposers, an emerging Duluth duo of singer-songwriter Erin Paulson and synth soundscape artist Kenneth Gregory Bressler will be held in the Log Cabin at the Community Center.
There’s lots of live music at the Log Cabin on Saturday night.
The music starts at 7 pm. The doors open at 6 pm. A $10-15 suggested donation goes to the artists. Open to all ages.
On Monday, an Ecstatic Dance session will be held at the Log Cabin at the Community Center starting at 7 pm.
Ecstatic Dance will be held at the Log Cabin on March 31.
Ecstatic Dance is an intentional, judgment-free space for free-form movement without words. It offers participants the opportunity for fun, healing, flow, and play. Free. To read more, click here.
On Tuesday, Joy and Company will host “Smash It!” a creative way for artists and art lovers to respond to our times.
A Smash Party is set for Tuesday, April 1, at Joy and Company starting at 5:30 pm..
From all reports, there will be plenty of pottery there to smash and then recreate as mosaics. Open to all. Free.
On Wednesday, the nationally acclaimed duo, Moors & McCumber, will perform at the Lofty Gondola on Lutsen Mountains at 8 pm.
The sound of Moors & McCumber is adventurous, eclectic, and endlessly creative. Borrowing from rock, pop, blues, folk, and world music, the two multi-instrumentalists defy common logic and embrace spontaneity to bring their stories and songs to life.
This is a listening session. In an effort to create a safe and intimate environment and to give audience members an opportunity to immerse themselves in the stories and craft of the song, guests in the main room are asked to limit conversation during the performance.

Two exhibits continue at the Duluth Art Institute: Ellen Sandbeck’s papercuts, entitled As Long as the River Runs, and Tali Margolin’s multi-media show, Navigating Moments. Both exhibits continue through April 18.

The Art Institute galleries are located at the US Bank Building and are open during business hours, Monday through Friday.
The Thunder Bay Gallery is featuring the exhibit, The Planet Welcomed Me: A Commemoration of Robert Derbouka’s Art (1947 – 2024).

In the foyer of the gallery, a selection of paintings and sculptures, including some of his final pieces, celebrate the life and work of local artist Robert, or “Bob,” Derbouka. A self-taught artist, Derbouka’s work can be described as folk art or salvage art, though his paintings of string, large sculptures of carved wood and welded metal, and outdoor installations of vines and rocks defy categorization. In his obituary, he wrote, “The planet welcomed me with many voices and languages, its elements caressed and nurtured me. As a child, my mother would sometimes sit me in the corner of a wild strawberry patch while she picked. One year, she jarred 32 pints.”
His works express joy and ambition for a life off the beaten path. He was an artist who was moved to celebrate and critique the human condition. The exhibit continues through June 1.
