Greetings from the North Shore, where winter and spring are trading places this month. Warmer temps are coming soon, and then look for tiny green shoots on trees and shrubs, as well as early daffodils and other perennials.
The quickening of the season is felt in studios, too, as art-making continues.
This week, participants in Art Night will experiment with high-flow acrylic paint on paper at Joy and Company.
High Flow paint is a relatively new product from Golden Artist Colors. High Flow, as the name implies, is a very flowy paint. The big advantage is that it is opaque and extremely fluid at the same time. It can be used with a variety of techniques including airbrush, dip pens, and straight out of the bottle.
Art Night is held from 3:30-5 pm at the shop and is free, with a suggested $5 donation.
The North Shore Swing band will play at Up Yonder on Thursday from 7-9 pm.

The band includes talented musicians from the county who play a great selection of danceable jazz tunes. Open to all. Free.
On Friday, a Benefit Show for the Pederson family will be held at the Log Cabin building at the Cook County Community Center starting at 7 pm.
The show will feature AbbyZak, Neil Pederson & Chandler Litterst, and Mike Lewis & Barbara Jean.
The Pedersons had a devastating fire on their property this winter. The public is invited to show their support for this Cook County family.

Barbara Jean and Mike Lewis are one of the groups who will play for a benefit show for the Pederson family at the Log Building on Friday.
Saturday is movie night at the Arrowhead Center for the Arts with the screening of a film about art’s redemptive power.
Hosted by the Grand Marais Film Society, the movie features a theater group, a cast of formerly imprisoned men, and was nominated for Best Actor. Tickets are $5 at the door or click here. To find out more and see a trailer, click here.
Sunday is the monthly Full Moon Reading at Drury Lane Books.

A Full Moon Poetry Reading will be held by the bonfire at Drury Lane Books on Sunday, starting at 6 pm.
The public is invited to participate in this monthly open mic-style reading. While the event does focus on poetry, the broader goal is human connection – don’t feel pressured to participate or strictly read poetry. Sometimes, participants can watch the moon rise over the lake, and sometimes there are guest poets — it is always a good time. The facilitator is Bookseller Cynthia.
The group meets at the fire circle on the beach behind the bookstore in downtown Grand Marais at 6 p.m. Expect to be indoors when the weather is uncomfortable. Free.
The LGTBQ+ and Friends Country Western Dance Night is set for the second Monday of the month in the Log Building at the Community Center.
The event will be held from 7-9 pm, with beginner lessons from 7-7:30. All are welcome. Free.
Exhibits:
A new exhibit entitled “Gentle Hikes of Minnesota’s North Shore through the Lens of Arts and Health,” with photographs by Ladona Tornabene, opened at the Johnson Heritage Post on Friday.
The exhibit features tableaus, information, and photographs of gentle and inspiring hikes along the North Shore. Tornabene, who is a health educator at UMD, crafted the exhibit which celebrates the outdoors and healing for those who explore the many trails along the Big Lake. The exhibit continues through April 20.
The Heritage Post is open from 10 am-4 pm, Thursday through Saturday, and from 1-4 pm on Sunday. Free.
Tettegouche State Park has opened an exhibit of photographs by Hayes Scriven in the Great Hall at the Visitor Center.

Boat and Milky Way by Hayes Scriven is one of the photographs on view in the Great Hall at Tettegouche.
Scriven is the Keeper of the lighthouse at Split Rock and an outstanding photographer. The exhibit continues through the end of April.
Upcoming:
The Grand Marais Art Colony will hold a Charity Auction to support the work of the Art Colony featuring the work of Jody (Joan) Stadler.
Stadler, a geneticist and artist, was born in 1929 in St. Petersburg, Fla, and was raised in Crawfordsville, Ind. She earned a BA in Botany from Wellesley College and a PhD in Genetics. In 1972, she began working as a Genetics Professor at Iowa State University, and she retired from ISU in 1997. After retiring, she moved to St. Paul, Minnesota, and began pursuing a second career in art. During that time, she spent time studying at the Grand Marais Art Colony, much of the time with artist and instructor Hazel Belvo. Her time at GMAC meant quite a bit to her, in her growth as an artist. Being able to give back to GMAC through this auction would have meant a great deal to her.
