First snow by Layne Kennedy.

First Snow by Layne Kennedy.

Greetings from the North Shore, where we celebrate Thanksgiving with the first snowfall of the season. We’re also so thankful to all the artists, musicians, and photographers who share their work with us. Thank you.

The 51st  annual Community Thanksgiving Dinner will be held at the First Congregational Church on Thursday in the Fellowship Hall at 1 pm. Doors open at noon. The meal is free, but donations are gratefully accepted.

The 51st annual Community Thanksgiving Dinner is free and open to the public.

 This year’s menu will include roast turkey with gravy, mashed potatoes, stuffing, green bean casserole, sweet potatoes, cranberry sauce, and pumpkin pie.

The event was first held in 1974 as a way for individuals without nearby family to enjoy fellowship and good food during the holiday. But since then, for many residents, the dinner has become an important part of their annual holiday celebrations.

Thanksgiving feasts will also be served at several local restaurants and lodges. If you would like to find out more, please click here.

In Memory of Jimmy Cliff
Submitted by Stephen Janasie. Janasie is a WTIP on-air host and the creator of the “Man in the Hills” radio program, a celebration of Jamaican music past and present.
Jimmy Cliff is a giant in the world of popular music, and trying to capture his legacy in five tracks is silly, but with his passing, we thought a quick primer on his music would be appropriate. If you’ve never dug into his music before, this will get you off on the right foot.

Jimmy Cliff got his start writing and recording music as a teenager, working with Jamaican producer Leslie Kong. Around this same time, he introduced Mr. Kong to another young talent – the one and only Bob Marley, kick-starting his career as well.

Here are three selections from the The Harder They Come soundtrack, a film Jimmy Cliff starred in. He also wrote and performed the bulk of the music. The first two tracks were frequently covered by Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead. The third is one of the most stirring vocal performances in recorded music. I chose more recent live recordings for the last two tracks because it is notable that Mr. Cliff remained an active and impressive performing artist well into the 21st century.

;

The last song is a personal pick. Jimmy Cliff’s creative peak was in the early to mid-1970s, and there are so many great tracks to choose from, but this one has such an irresistible groove to it that it has to be my choice for a fifth and final song.

RIP, Jimmy Cliff. He is a mainstay on my “Man in the Hills” mixes, and I will miss having him in our world. This is a big loss.
