Greetings from the North Shore, where we’re really getting slammed by a blizzard today. Snow totals so far: Hovland, 34 inches by late Wednesday afternoon, Lutsen, 24 inches. More snow is forecast. Looks like the snow games will continue for a while in Cook County.
Meanwhile, art-making and music opportunities continue.
On Friday, Hungry Hippie Tacos features an opportunity to play cards and cribbage at the restaurant from 2-8 pm.
The public is invited.
Also on Friday, the Grand Marais Public Library will screen “A Complete Unknown,” a film about Bob Dylan, as part of its Friday Night Reels series. The film is free and starts at 6 pm.

On Saturday, the Violence Prevention Center will celebrate its 40th anniversary at the Grand Marais Art Colony‘s Founders Hall from 5-7 pm.

The Violence Prevention Center will celebrate its 40th anniversary on Saturday at the Art Colony’s Founders Hall.
The event will feature presentations about VPC’s impact on the community as well as stories of hope and community connection. Refreshments will be available. A silent auction will be held as a fundraiser for the organization. The public is invited. Tickets are $30.
On Monday, Anna Hamilton, co-founder of Hamilton Habitat, will be the featured speaker at a WISE luncheon at the Cook County Community Center at noon. WISE is the Women’s Initiative for Service & Education.

Anna Hamilton and her sister Sarah are founders of Hamilton Habitat, which is building affordable homes in Cook County.

Next Thursday, Feb. 26, Great Expectations School will hold a Chili Cook-off as a fundraiser for a service learning a trip to Panama.
The event will feature a cake walk and a 50/50 raffle. Tickets are $10 for an individual, $30 for a family. The public is invited.

Exhibits:
From Our Hearts and Hands, an exhibit by members of the Northwoods Fiber Guild, is currently on view at the Johnson Heritage Post. More than 40 members of the guild have works in this show, featuring everything from felting, weaving, knitting, paper, and more.

Chair of Hope, a collage of works by Guild members, invites viewers to sit and write a note in these difficult times.
The exhibit continues through Feb. 22.
Linda Ricklefs Baudry is the Artist of the Month at the Heritage Post through the end of the month. She is exhibiting a number of her monoprints.

The Heritage Post is open from 10 am to 4 pm Thursday through Saturday and from 2-4 pm Sunday. Free.
Artist and digital photographer Tad Anderson is currently exhibiting work at Tettegouche State Park.

The Minneapolis Institute of Art has opened a new exhibit honoring the Year of the Horse in the Chinese Zodiac. It began Feb. 17.

China, Eastern Han dynasty (25–220 CE), Celestial Horse, 1st century CE, bronze with traces of polychrome, is on view at the MIA.
The new exhibition “Year of the Horse: Hoofbeats through Time” demonstrates that Equus has long galloped through China’s cultural imagination, serving as perhaps the best companion one could have in both life and death. To read more about what this means and to see more images, click here.
There are two new art exhibits at the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum coinciding with the Spring Flower Show. The exhibit is entitled “Fiber, Fragment and Form” and features works by fiber artist Martha Bird and glass artist Marilyn Cox.

In the Twin Cities, Springboard for the Arts is developing programs to respond to artists working there.
- Artists Respond: Safety in Neighbors: We’re funding artists to create small, neighborhood-scale projects that make community care intentional and accessible. How would you like to respond to this moment with your community? Share your project idea with us. Applications are open on a rolling basis.
- Creative Business Recovery Fund: Has your creative small business been impacted? This new rapid response fund from Springboard will support 50 Minnesota micro-businesses and artists by providing $2,000 to help recover from months of lost sales and to reinvest in their creative businesses. Applications are open now.
- Statewide Artists Emergency Relief Fund Network: Stewarded by Springboard for the Arts, this coalition of regional organizations in Minnesota supports artists and creative workers with one-time emergency relief funds. Geographic scope, cycles, and eligibility vary by program.
