Greetings from the North Shore, where we can honestly report that spring has sprung and summer is on its way. There’s lots of snow over the hill, but it’s melting fast, and here, close to Lake Superior, you have to look hard to see a wedge of white. You don’t have to look very hard for daffodils and rhubarb, though. They’re poking out of the ground everywhere. Returning birds are overwhelming feeders, and the waterfalls and rivers are roaring. Happy Earth Day week!
And art-making continues.
First up is the Art Project Counter at Joy and Company, an event held each Thursday from 3-4:30 pm.
This week, participants will make Victorian Puzzle Purses. The event is free and open to all. Supplies will be provided as well as instructions. The public is invited.
On Friday, the Johnson Heritage Post will open the 7th Annual North Shore Artists’ League exhibit, “Beneath the Snow: What Winter Hides, Spring Reveals.”
A special exhibition all about North Shore Bioluminescence, created by Sawtooth Mountain Elementary kindergarteners, 1st, and 2nd graders, has opened at Studio 21.
This glowing exhibition features artwork inspired by plants and animals that use bioluminescence on the North Shore. The exhibit is open on Fridays from 1-5 pm through May 8. Free. The public is invited.
Cook County resident, Dr. Muain Haseeb, will present Life in Palestine Before 1948 in two sessions, April 24 and May 1, at Cook County Higher Education, from 6-8 pm.

Life in Palestine before 1948, a presentation, will be held at Cook County Higher Education on Friday, April 24 and Friday, May 1.
A free presentation on life, culture, history, food, and craft is featured in this presentation. Participants will experience an immersive visual journey into Palestine before 1948 – a world of vibrant cities, rich cultural traditions, and everyday life captured through photographs and videos.
Gifts of Palestinian olive oil, textiles, garments, homemade food, and delicious desserts will be featured.
Also on Friday evening, a Bingo session will be held at Up Yonder from 6-8 pm.
The event is sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 413. The public is invited.
Doubles Cribbage Tournament: 5th Annual Fundraiser for the Bob Pratt Skills, Trades, and Technology Scholarship Fund will be held from 1-3 pm on Saturday at the Birch Terrace Supper Club.

The First Congregational Church will present Peter Mayer and Sara Thomsen in a concert on Saturday from 7-9 pm.
The Celebrate Earth Concert begins at 7 pm. Tickets are $33.85. For tickets, click here.
Also on Saturday night, Lutsong Songwriters will perform at Cascade Pub and Restaurant from 7-9 pm.
The concert will feature Lutsongs’ instructors and students. The public is invited.
Monday, an Ecstatic Dance will be held in the Log Cabin Building at 7 pm.
Ecstatic Dance is an intentional, judgement-free space for free-form movement without words.
An invitation to embodiment, fun, healing, flow, and play.
The dance starts at 7 pm with a warm-up set with slower tunes. Stretching and moving into a deeper embodied awareness. The public is invited.

The Annual Member Show at the Duluth Art Institute opened this week.

The Duluth Art Institute opened its Member Show on Tuesday.
This is a great show, featuring a wide variety of work by artists throughout the region. The show continues through May.
Chromesthesia: The Color of Sound, a multi-artist exhibit, opened at Lizzard’s Gallery last week.
Artists in this exhibit were asked to consider the color of sound, and the result is exciting. The exhibit continues through June.
A new exhibit of Contemporary Nordic folk Art has opened at the Walker Art Center.
View the traveling exhibition of contemporary Nordic folk art and cultural traditions from the American region, curated by the American-Scandinavian Foundation. This exhibition features stunning works by 24 artists from the Upper Midwest, including Tia Keobounpheng, Christine Novotny, John Frandy, Talon Cavender-Wilson, Mike Loeffler, and more. This exhibition is also supported in part by the Barbro Osher Pro Suecia Foundation. Several works will be on view at Norway House’s Mondale Gallery.
In Thunder Bay, the exhibit “Strong Law Bids Us Dance” continues at the Thunder Bay Art Gallery.

This large-scale exhibition resonates with the gallery’s 50th anniversary. A selection of charged and dynamic paintings, prints, and sculptures showcases more than 40 artists from the collection, including master Daphne Odjig (b. 1919 – d. 2016) and Ahmoo Angeconeb (b. 1955 – d. 2017), alongside music-making and regalia accessories by several artists not yet identified. Everyone is part of this circle.
Upcoming:
The North Shore Music Association has announced that the Midwest old-time and bluegrass group, Steam Machine, will be at the Hovland Town Hall for a concert and community dance at 7 p.m. on May 2.
It should be a fun, family-friendly event with sliding scale tickets and free admission for K–12 students. Click here for more info, tickets.
Plants and Trees
There are some great opportunities to get trees, seedlings, and plants this month.
Hedstrom Lumber will hold its annual Free Tree Seedling Giveaway on Friday, May 8, from 10 am to 4 pm, for those who preordered. Leftover seedlings will be available to the public after 4 pm.

A free tree and shrub seedling giveaway will be held at Bethlehem Lutheran Church on May 9.
The annual Plant Sale and Breakfast at Great Expectations School will be held on Saturday, May 16.
The Cook County Soil and Water District is offering several opportunities to get trees, shrubs, native plants, and more this year.
The tree sale ordering window closes on April 30, with pickup from noon to 4 pm on May 14 at the Cook County Courthouse. Click here to learn more.
