Winterer’s Gathering, Art and Music

Greetings from the North Shore, where winter is slowly descending upon us — first with rains, which filled the rivers and soon, perhaps, we’ll get lots of snow. Actually, to be accurate, Lake Superior warmed the cold air and the moisture came as rain, but over the hill and in the interior, it snowed.  Yippee! say winter lovers.

This weekend, the cold will be celebrated at North House Folk School during the annual Winterer’s Gathering & Arctic Film Festival, which will be held on campus Friday through Sunday.

Winterer's Gathering will be held on the campus of North House Folk School Nov. 19-21.

The event celebrates the crafts, customs, landscape, history and stories of winter travel and traditional life ways in the North.

One of the films that will be screened during the Arctic Film Festival is" Irakli's Lantern," a film about 78 year old Irakli Khvedaguridze has spent the last 25 winters living alone as the last inhabitant of Europe’s highest village.

Winterer’s Gathering launches on Friday afternoon with an Artisan Development Open Studio from 3-5 p.m. at the Betsy Bowen Gallery and Studios Building, 301 1st Ave. W.  It’s an opportunity to see what the artisans in this two-year program are working on this year. Then at 5:30 p.m, participants bring their own food for a cook-out on an open fire followed by outdoor screenings of short films.

Events on Saturday start at 9 a.m. and include the Arctic Film Festival,  demonstrations, classes,  the Great Ski & Gear Swap (10:30 a.m.), the Deep Freeze Chili Feed at 6 p.m. and a presentation by featured speaker Jon Turk at 7 p.m. Turk, an adventurer and author, will tell new stories of adventure and refections on the healing power of nature.

Author Jon Turk will give a presentation at 7 p.m. Saturday.
