Greetings from the North Shore, where winter continues. This year’s version features the checkerboard effect–snow and wind one day, sunny the next, snow and wind one day, sunny the next. The result has been lots of beautiful snow and some amazing ice creations along the shore of Lake Superior.

But it’s February in Cook County, and there’s lots to do and see.
The Grand Marais Art Colony is returning to its Instgram Takeovers on Thursdays, featuring some of its 2022 instructors. This week, potter Andy Bissonette will be featured on the Art Colony’s Instagram page on Thursday and Friday, where he will talk about his work and show some of his techniques.

This is Fiber Week at North House Folk School featuring lots of classes and workshops on campus and virtually. The public is also included in this celebratory event of all things fiber with a series of free webinars on Thursday and Friday.
On Thursday, Madeline Kreider Carlson will host the webinar, “Stitching Stories, Crafting Change: the Maya Women Artists of Multicolores Guatemala” at 7 p.m. CT. It is free. Click here to register.

Also on Friday, the Many Tiny Lights fundraiser, which had to be cancelled last week because of bad weather, will be held at Drury Lane Books at 6 p.m.. The event features beautiful luminaries placed in the snow on the beach as well as a bonfire and treats.
The event is a fundraiser fo the Grand Marais PTA and a $5 donation per luminary will be accepted. All invited.
On Saturday, we continue the lights-in-snow theme with a Candlelight Ski and Snowshoe through the Sugarbush Trail System that starts from the Oberg Mountain parking lot on the Onion River.
The trails will be lit with flickering candles for XC skieng, snowshoeing or hiking. Participants are invited to stop by the bonfire for cocoa and a cookie. Open to all.

Krystal Brown’s exhibit, Her Eurphoric Perspective, continues at the Johnson Heritage Post.
Brown was awarded the 2021 Plein Air Grand Marais Grand Prize last year. The exhibit continues through Feb. 28. The Heritage Post is open from 10 a.m to 4 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and from 1-4 p.m. Sunday.

The Grand Marais Playhouse launches its 50th season with An Evening of 10-Minute Plays Feb. 25-26. Performances start at 7 p.m. at the Arrowhead Center for the Arts.
