Greetings from the North Shore where summer light continues to make us happy. This is Grand Marais Arts Festival Weekend, and expect the downtown to be lined with white tents filled with great art and lots of people peering inside, looking for treasures.
I did the arts festival for a few years, and I will always remember that one year when it was about 95 degrees in our tent and pennies stuck to our fingers.
It won’t be that way this year. Instead, we will continue with our cool summer temps and light breezes over Lake Superior, making it an almost idyllic time to look at art and enjoy friends and family.
There are lots of other things to do this week and plenty of live music, too. (See the Live Music Schedule below.)
First up on Thursday, is Art Night at Joy and Company.
Art Night offers participants an opportunity to make art with different materials and art supplies available at the shop. Projects vary each week. This week, everyone will be able to make and decorate bookmarks. There will be demonstrations too. The event runs from 4-6 pm on Thursdays and is free, with a suggested donation. Open to all.
Also on Thursday, the Grand Marais Farmer’s Market will be held in the parking lot of the Community Center from 4:30 pm to 6 pm.
The market features a wide range of locally grown vegetables, maple syrup, artisan breads, baked goods, and more. SNAP is accepted. All invited.
On Friday and Saturday, jewelers and rock hounds Billy and Barry Larsen will be at Joy and Company. They make jewelry and are entertaining, informative, and fun.
Pick out and design your very own pendant or ring and meet some of the most solid guys around the Northland. They will be here July 7-8 during the annual Grand Marais Arts Festival (in part sponsored by Joy & Co.) and again Sept. 23-24 during the annual Art Along the Lake Fall Studio Tour.
This week, Saturday begins on the streets in downtown Grand Marais with the Grand Marais Arts Festival, which opens at 9 am. The festival is an annual juried art event that has taken place on the North Shore for more than 30 years.
As a microcosm of the dynamic art scene, this event features work by excellent artists working in a wide variety of mediums. Shop at 60 artist booths for ceramics, paintings, jewelry, photography, woodwork, sculpture, fiber art, prints, and more.
Here are just a few examples of what you’ll see:
The Arts Festival hours are 9 am to 5 pm Saturday and 10 am to 4 pm Sunday. To find out more about the festival and participating artists, click here.
Also on Saturday, the Cook County Market, featuring work by local artists and artisans, will be held in the parking lot of The Hub (Senior Center) from 10 am to 2 pm.
Look for paintings, cards, felted animals, handmade lotions and balms, Lake Superior stones, jewelry, stone lamps, and pottery to name a few. There is live music as well.
Tuesdays are one of the most popular days at Chik-Wauk Museum & Nature Center because it’s Kids’ Day.
Children 18 and under can visit the Chik-Wauk Campus free of charge. On that day, Chik-Wauk staff will offer a variety of hands-on activities all related to the unique history and nature of the Gunflint Trail. Activities include Journal making, craft projects, storytelling, and nature hikes.
A parent or guardian must always accompany children at the Nature Center. Donations are appreciated to cover the costs of materials and supplies. Take your time driving up the Gunflint Trail National Scenic Byway. A moose or two might be seen.
On Wednesday, Poplar Haus Restaurant & Bar will hold a Pre-Party and Dance for the Gunflint Trail Canoe Races and the Gunflint Trail Volunteer Fire Department, from 8-11 pm. All invited.
Food will be available and music will be provided by Celebrity DJ andPoplar Haus’ very own, Bryan Gerrard. A $10 donation to the fire department is suggested. The popular Gunflint Trail Canoe Races will be held the following week, July 19, at Gunflint Lodge starting at 4 pm.
Also on Wednesday, a dance will be held at the Colvilll Town Hall from 7-9 pm.
The dance is presented by the Covill Community Club. All invited. Tickets are $5.
The 2nd annual Lutsong Music Festival begins next Thursday and continues through the weekend at Caribou Highlands and the North Shore Winery.
The Caribou Highlands great lawn will host artisans, musicians, and music lovers all weekend with two stages, a vendor village, food and drink.
Head down the hill to the North Shore Winery main stage each night for the headliner act. After those headliner shows you can take the shuttle back to Caribou Highlands for the Caribou Campfire Guitar Pull.
The line-up of musicians is impressive. See it here, and check out our Live Music Schedule.

Downtown Grand Marais, ca. 1952
The potholes in the sea wall and gravel on the street were caused by storm waves. By the end of the 1950s, boulders were dropped on the lake side of the sea wall to reinforce it and help to help protect the stonework from the storms.

We were lucky again this week and found some great photographs. Enjoy!
Wildlife::
Bloomington resident Tom Peissig has trained the local deer population that if he shakes a rattle cup and the deer come to investigate, they’ll get a treat. Deer-calling rattle cups can be found locally at the Betsy Bowen Studio Gallery and The Blue Moose.
