Greetings from the North Shore, where we are treasuring every shower, every drop of rain, unlike what people are probably feeling in New York and Vermont. We’re so sorry for them. Here, on the North Shore of Lake Superior, it’s been very dry. Lake Superior might be just outside our windows in its spectacular blue glory going on forever, but, truth be told, it needs the rain, too. Happy Days.
There’s lots happening this week in the art and music scene in our neighborhood. Here are some highlights:
During the summer months, instructors-in-residence at North House Folk School give demonstrations in the Commons from 10 am to 4 pm Thursday through Sunday.
This week, wooden spoon carver, Wesley Hathaway, and hide tanner Delaney Keshena will be demonstrating there. The public is invited to stop by.
Art Night at Joy and Company is a weekly opportunity to learn the process of making art and experimenting with different materials. This week, on Thursday, July 13, the topic will be rolled paper beads, an ancient technique developed in Africa.
Art Night is held from 4-6 pm at the shop and is free and open to the public, with a suggested donation.
Also on Thursday, the Grand Marais Farmer’s Market will be held in the parking lot of the Cook County Community Center from 4:30-6 pm.

Over the weekend, artists and artisans will be exhibiting on the great lawn at Caribou Highlands and food and drink will be available as well as a variety of activities and games. Everyone is invited.
If you happen to be going to Duluth on Thursday, and/or live there, consider Mural Hopping in the evening. Two artists, Jonathan Thunder and Adam Swanson have opening receptions for their downtown mural projects on Thursday.
First, Jonathan Thunder’s mural at the Zenith Bookstore is completed and a reception is planned for 4 pm Thursday. The public is invited.
Then, starting at 5 pm, a reception will be held to celebrate Adam Swanson’s pollinator mural at the entrance to the Depot.

Exhibits:
“Oil Paintings from Life,” an exhibit of works by Lee Englund continues at the Johnson Heritage Post.
The exhibit features a great selection of plein air paintings by Englund, who was an art teacher at Lincoln Park High School in Duluth for years and spent hours on the North Shore painting its beauty. The exhibit continues through July 26.
Air — Openness, the summer exhibition by the Grand Marais Art Colony in Studio 21 continues through mid-September.
The exhibit features work by four artists from the region. Studio 21 is open from 10 am to 3 pm Wednesday through Saturday. Free.
There are a number of exhibits at The Duluth Art Institute this summer, including Keren Kroul’s “Atlas of the Mind,” a series of watercolors on paper.
The imagery in this exhibit evokes a universal connection—cosmic or microscopic, liquid or gaseous. Kroul explains: “This work is made slowly, meticulously, like a woven tapestry. I am interested in slowness, slowing down the making, to capture an essence of something ephemeral, at the edge of things, just beyond reach.” It continues through mid-September.
Upcoming:
The Grand Marais Art Colony will host a pop-up exhibition of pieces created by participants in the “Mobiles: Sculpting with Line and Volume” class this summer. The exhibit will be held on Thursday, July 20, from 4:30- 5:30 pm at Studio 21.
Instructing artists Danny Saathoff and Kari Halker-Saathoff worked with a group of young artists and adults to create suspended, mobile-like sculptures using materials such as reed, tissue paper, wire, and glue. In this final gallery-style show, air currents will gently act on the pieces to bring them to life This event is free and open to the public.
