Greetings from Grand Marais, where the light of summer brings blues to the lake and sky and warm breezes touch the land. The Summer Solstice is only a few days away and brings with it North House Folk School’s Wooden Boat Show, a feast of boats, crafts and Lake Superior from Friday through Sunday.
But first, online-Thursday.
First up is the Grand Marais Art Colony‘s Instagram Takeover Artist for the week. Book artist Amanda D’Amico will be featured on Thursday and Friday.

D’Amico is working under the imprint Tiny Revolutionary Press in Philadelphia. She teaches at Tyler School of Art at Temple University and the University of the Arts, as well as presents workshops at various national institutions. She will be teaching a class at the Art Colony this summer entitled “Book Structure as Sculpture.”

Also on Thursday, North House Folk School is featuring a free online workshop at noon entitled “Danish Paper Cuts,” where participants will learn how to make paper cuts with Torben Jarlstrom Clausen.

The On-Campus Wooden Boat Show at North House Folk School is Friday through Sunday this weekend, with some exciting new twists, including a chance to see Pilgrim, a 42-foot wooden lapstrake boat from Petrozavodsk, Russia.
The Russian tall ship, The Pilgrim, will be docked at North House Folk School for the Wooden Boat Show this weekend.
Brothers Sergey and Alexander Sinelnik spent two years building Pilgrim, which is modeled after an 18th-century Russian sailing vessel used by fishermen and merchants. They splashed Pilgrim in 2017 in Petrozavodsk, and spent the next three years sailing more than 12,000 miles, finishing their last leg in Petrozavodsk’s sister city of Duluth in the summer of 2020. It wintered there, and they’ve hit the water again and will sail to Grand Marais for the Wooden Boat Show. They are raising the funds needed to ship their boat overland to Seattle, where they plan to set sail again for Russia. Not only is their boat a historical replica, but they also have onboard a floating model exhibit of structures and vessels that represent Russian culture and history. Everyone is invited to see their boat on the North House docks and their model exhibit on display Also, the Russian brothers will be interviewed on WTIP’s The Roadhouse on Friday night. The Roadhouse airs from 5-7 p.m.
Also new this year at Wooden Boat Show, folksinger John C. Van Orman will sing songs of sailing, sculling and sinking at 5:30 p.m. on campus.
John C. Van Orman will sing selection of traditional sea shanties, lyrical sailor songs, and nautical ballads while accompanying himself on concertina, guitar, and hurdy-gurdy from 5:30-6:30 p.ml on Friday.
And on Saturday, celebrate the Summer Solstice with the first-ever “Wooden Boat Show-Community Paddle/Row/Sail on the Harbor! Small Craft Takeover!” Unfortunately, the annual Solstice Pageant will not be performed this year due to Covid concerns, but weather permitting, North House invites anyone with a boat for a row, paddle or sail on the beautiful waters of the Grand Marais harbor. Portage on down to campus and head out from our docks or use the Rec Park boat launch, with ample parking available. There will be music from onboard the Hjordis. Let’s be social but distanced to celebrate the coming solstice! BYO boat, PFDs, and paddles. All invited.
There are lots of other things to do and see ver the weekend, too, including a wooden boat display, the Boat-To-Tools Auction, Family Drop-in Crafts and Crafting on the Commons, featuring 12 artisans demonstrating their work over the weekend. For more info, about the boat show, click here.
Another great feature this weekend is the Cook County Market, which is held in the parking lot of The Hub (the Senior Center) from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday.

This is the last weekend to see the Johnson Heritage Post exhibit “Off the Grid,” abstract paintings by Patricia DeVries.

The Grand Marais Art Colony’s summer exhibit, “But It Was Still There,” continues at Studio 21. The exhibit features work by Moira Bateman, Annie Hejny, Moheb Soliman, and Nick Wroblewski.

The gallery at Studio 21 is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday.
Also, the Art of Reciprocity Exhibition by Sean Connaughty at Sugarloaf Cove is open. The exhibit, which is an installation by Connaughty developed during his residency there in collaboration with the Grand Marais Art Colony.

A new exhibit has opened at the Duluth Art Institute entitled DeFUSE featuring the work of Tia Keobounpheng.

The Thunder Bay Art Gallery has opened an online exhibit of work by regional high school students. The exhibit is entitled “Fresh Perspectives.”

Library Friends will hold a Pop-Up Used Book Sale on Saturday, June 26, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the backyard of Joy & Co. at 16 1st Avenue West in downtown Grand Marais. Featured items for sale will be: novels, cookbooks, art books and puzzles. All proceeds from the sale will go to benefit area libraries and reading programs.
If you would like to donate items for the sale, there will be two collection dates, both held at the The Hub/ Senior Center, at 10 Broadway in downtown Grand Marais. Book collection days are:
- Monday, June 21, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
- Thursday, June 24, from 2 to 5 p.m.
Hardcover and paperback books in good to excellent condition will be accepted in the following genres: novels, cookbooks, art related books. Complete, used puzzles will also be accepted. Each donation will be limited to 10 items per person.
The Hovland Arts Festival will be held at the Hovland Town Hall July 3-4 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
