It’s pretty quiet this week in Cook County, except for the rivers. They have totally exploded and are celebrating the arrival of spring even more than we are.

The Homegrown Music Festival is happening in Duluth this week with lots of music by a huge variety of local bands performing throughout the city and in Superior, Wis. To see the schedule, click here.
The Grand Marais Art Colony will host Julie Snidle at its Instagram Takeover Artist on Thursday.
Snidle is an abstract painter who teaches encaustic and oil/cold wax workshops throughout the country. Julie will teach a workshop this summer at the Grand Marais Art Colony. To see her Instagram posts. click here.
It’s Mother’s Day weekend and a landmark event for potters and pottery lovers, the St. Croix Valley Pottery Tour, will be held in person this year. Seven studios with more than 4o potters from around the country and internationally will be featured in this sale, which runs from Friday, May 6 through Sunday, May 8.
There’s a special perk this year, too. For those who can’t make it to the sale, there will be a special online preview Thursday, May 5, featuring a great selection of pots. To find out more, see maps and photos and what potters are exhibiting, click here.
Much closer to home, Minneapolis photographer and installation artist, Michelle Westmark Wingard, will give an Artist Talk at 5 p.m. on Friday, May 5, at the Johnson Heritage Post. She will also teach an all-ages interactive workshop Saturday, May 7, from 10 a.m. until noon. All invited.
The Artist Talk is in conjunction with the community art exhibit, Growing Toward the Light, currently on exhibit,.The show was organized by Spirit of the Wilderness Church and features a variety of art from artists of every age. Here are a few examples:
The Growing Toward the Light exhibit features paintings, drawings, sculptures, glass, and fiber art, and continues through May 22.
The Heritage Post is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and Monday, and from 1-4 p.m. Sunday. It is closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
Also on Friday, May 6, printmaker Nan Onkka will open an exhibit of her work at the MacRostie Art Center in Grand Rapids with a reception starting at 4 p.m.
The show, which is featured with other exhibits, continues through June 25.

Watch nationally acclaimed Tlingit glass artist, Preston Singletary talk about and work on the intricate blown glass pieces for his exhibit, Raven and the Box of Daylight, which is currently on view at the Smithsonian Museum of the American Indian in Washington, D.C.

An exhibit of George Morrison’s work is currently on view at the Grand Portage National Monument Heritage Center with a special exhibit entitled “Connections.” For this exhibit, the National Park Service has gathered works in their collection, along with works and artifacts from private collections, for the exhibition. The show will run through September.
And not to forget, George Morrison Forever Stamps are now available at your local post office.

Tettegouche Art Shows Are Back!
Tettegouche State Park has reinstated its art shows, featuring works by local artists, which were paused during the Covid pandemic. Wildlife photographer Ryan Pennesi will exhibit his work in the Great Hall at the park, with an opening reception at 7 p.m. May 20.
The Northwoods Fiber Guild will have an exhibit at the Johnson Heritage Post entitled “Through Our Hands” that will open June 24. Pictured is beadwork by Jo Wood.
